5 TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR HVAC SYSTEM FOR FALL

The first day of fall is today! Can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday we were taking a dip in the pool on a hot sunny afternoon to cool off. It’s time to pull out the sweaters, watch football, and enjoy pumpkin spice-flavored everything! It’s also time when the cooler weather creeps up on us unexpectedly and before we know it will be in 50s, with the heat on standby and ready to kick on. Now is the perfect time to begin to prep your HVAC system for the winter season.  Here are a few helpful tips to get you started.

Check your air filters. Dirty furnaces and air conditioning filters can cause several problems with your HVAC system. For instance, it may prevent your system from heating or cooling your home adequately and efficiently. Replace your air conditioning filter before shutting it down, this way it will be ready for when it’s time to kick on again. Stay on top of furnace filter changes throughout the heating months to keep your system working properly.

Seal Air Leaks. Prevent drafts and decrease energy waste in your home by sealing windows and doors with caulk and weather-stripping. Leaky ductwork can be sealed with mastic or aluminum tape.

Clean up your outdoor unit. If you have an outdoor unit, double-check for any debris or damage. Remove all debris around the unit to ensure proper airflow and to prevent dirt or leaves from getting on the coils or inside the unit. If you find any signs of damage, give Green Apple Mechanical a call!

Check on your alarms and detectors. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are essential devices that keep you safe. Replace the batteries with new ones. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends that you replace your smoke detectors every 10 years. If you are unsure of the last time they were replaced, check the date of manufacture on the back of the smoke detector.  Push the test button on each device to ensure they are working properly.

Schedule a maintenance checkup. The best way to prepare your system for fall is to schedule a maintenance checkup with us. During the checkup, our Green Apple technicians thoroughly inspect your furnace and make the necessary adjustments to ensure your system is operating correctly.
